Contemporary Challenges for Food Supplements – EU Regulations on Safety and Efficacy
  • A “Novel Food” has not been consumed to a significant degree by humans in the EU before 15 May 1997. Regulation (EU) 2015/2283 has both an Application Procedure and (for traditional foods from a third country) a Notification Procedure towards authorisation.
  • Functional foods cover nutrition claims and health claims. Health claims on foods must be scientifically substantiated. Regulation (EU) 1924/2006 is to ensure that any claim made on a food's labelling, presentation or advertising in the European Union is clear, accurate and based on scientific evidence.
  • The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) provides the scientific advice to the European Commission on novel foods and health claims. Applicants must make clever dossiers.
